Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses suction to permanently remove fat from your body. It’s also the most common type of cosmetic surgery in the nation, with an estimated 300,000 procedures performed each and every year.

One of the reasons liposuction is so popular is the ability to refine the shape of your body in a relatively short period of time. For men and women who’ve struggled to reach their fitness goals through diet and exercise alone, a liposuction is a tool that can take them to that next level.

How is liposuction performed?

Depending on the treatment area and how much fat is being removed, liposuction is performed under local or general anesthesia. You won’t feel any pain during your procedure, and you’ll receive pain medication to lessen discomfort as you recover.

Once you’re resting comfortably, Dr. Verma begins by creating small incisions to insert thin tubes into the fat beneath your skin. The most common type of liposuction is called tumescent liposuction, which involves injecting multiple liters of a saline solution to make it easier to suction out the targeted fat. There are other options that use ultrasound, lasers, and powered surgical tools to ease fat removal.

When will I see the results of my liposuction?

It’s important to understand that there will be some swelling present in the days and weeks after your procedure as your body heals. Don’t be distressed if the treatment area actually appears larger than it did prior to your treatment.

You should begin to see results within a few weeks, but it can take several months before the swelling is completely gone. At that point, you’ll be able to appreciate the full results of your procedure.

Though the fat cells removed during liposuction are gone forever, that doesn’t mean your results will never change. If you gain a considerable amount of weight after liposuction, the remaining fat cells will simply expand to accommodate newly created fat. That’s why liposuction is best for men and women who’ve achieved and are able to maintain a healthy weight.
